The nature of that work is that you simply spend lots of time with people who find themselves close to death. And the expertise taught me two issues â€" firstly, to cherish life, as you by no means know when it will finish, and secondly, that those who had loved properly and put effort into something that they were enthusiastic about seemed to face dying with more ease than those that had focussed on gathering wealth and status. There was a beautiful show on Radio 4 some years ago called ‘Advice to the Living’ which was recommendation from folks with te rminal illness. I still bear in mind one of many individuals saying: ‘Am I liked? Am I loving properly? When all else has been stripped away it will still remain’ Advice to live by.
